VQ and VR engines are smooth and long-lived when maintained properly. The CVT on QX60 models needs attention on schedule.
Real faults we see
Cold-start chain rattle on the VQ35DE is a known issue on higher-mileage cars. Usually the tensioner or guides. Caught early it’s a straightforward repair; ignored, it becomes a full engine-out job.
The CVT on QX60 models jerks under load when fluid is degraded or levels are low. A drain-and-fill with Infiniti-spec NS-3 fluid resolves most cases. We test before and after to confirm.
Some VQ-series engines use more oil than expected past 80k km. Check the dipstick between services. We perform a consumption test if you’re seeing loss before recommending any internal work.
The steer-by-wire system on the Q50 occasionally throws a DAS warning. Usually a software reset resolves it. If it recurs, we inspect the rack module and steering column sensors.
A/C compressor failure on high-mileage QX50 and QX70 is common after year 10. Gradual cooling loss in traffic is the first sign. We check the whole system before recommending a compressor replacement.
