The two do meet. Worn shocks lengthen stopping distance, so when the pads and rotors measure fine and the car still feels unsettled as you brake, suspension is the next thing we look at.

The workshop difference

A brake noise tells you something is worn. It does not tell you what.

Squeal, judder and a long pedal each have more than one cause, and the causes overlap. Thin pads squeal. So do perfectly healthy pads that glazed over or sat on a damp rotor overnight. One needs parts, the other often needs nothing at all. Quote off the noise and you either sell someone a job they did not need or miss the one they did.

So the wheels come off and everything gets a number. Pad thickness at each corner with a gauge, written down in millimetres against the manufacturer minimum for your car. Rotor thickness against spec, runout on a dial indicator. Slider pins moved by hand, pistons watched as the pedal releases, fluid tested for moisture with a refractometer. Numbers beat opinions.

Then you get the readings and the photos and you decide. If the pads are sitting comfortably above minimum we say so and you drive off. If a rotor has gone under, we show you the measurement next to the spec rather than asking you to take our word for it. What actually gets checked

Brakes are four parts, and only one of them is the pad

Most brake quotes stop at pads, because pads are the quick answer. They are also often not the part causing your symptom. Every check here covers all four whether or not you came in complaining about them.

Brake pads

Front and rear thickness measured with a gauge and recorded in millimetres. Inner against outer wear pattern noted, since uneven wear points at caliper drag rather than mileage. Wear sensor condition checked, and a photo of each pad face goes into your report beside the spec for your exact model.

Brake rotors

Thickness measured against manufacturer minimum spec, runout measured with a dial indicator, so the skim-or-replace call comes off numbers instead of a glance. Surface scoring, lip wear and heat discolouration checked at each corner, and anything cracked, hot-spotted or warped gets photographed.

Calipers and sliders

Slider pin movement and grease condition tested, piston retract behaviour watched after the pedal releases, piston seals checked for weeping fluid. Where the parking brake runs through the caliper, that mechanism gets operated too. Caliper drag is what wears one side faster than the other.

Brake fluid

Boil point and moisture content tested with a refractometer rather than judged by the colour in the reservoir. Level and visible contamination noted, replacement interval checked against your manufacturer’s schedule. Singapore humidity gets into brake fluid faster than the manual assumes, and wet fluid is what gives you a long pedal on a hard stop.

Can it wait for the next service, or does it need to go in now?

Brakes give you warning before they stop working properly. The line sits at whether the noise has turned metallic, and whether the pedal still feels the way it did last month.

If you are in the second column, say so when you book your next service and we will measure while the wheels are already off. What we would not do is wait out a grind. Metal on metal turns a pad job into a pad and rotor job, and the rotor is the expensive half. How long it takes
The check itself is usually under an hour. A front pad and rotor change normally runs 1 to 2 hours, and we tell you which of those you are looking at before we start. Pickup and drop-off is available islandwide with a couple of days’ notice.

Brake repair, answered

How often should I change brake pads in Singapore?

Roughly every 30,000 to 60,000 km, and how you drive moves that number more than the odometer does. A daily run from Kaki Bukit into the CBD is mostly stop-start, which wears pads faster than the same distance on an expressway. We measure at every service and write the reading down, so pads get changed when the pad says so rather than when the calendar does.

Do I need to change pads and rotors at the same time?

Not always. Where the rotor is still above minimum thickness and the surface is not scored, we change the pads and leave the rotor alone. We measure first, then show you the reading, the manufacturer minimum and a photo of the rotor face, and you decide with the numbers in front of you. Where a rotor has gone past the point of skimming, we say that plainly too.

My brakes squeal only in the rain. Is that a problem?

Usually not. Glazed pads and a light surface rust on the rotor both squeal when wet. If the noise clears once the pads have warmed up and dried out, you are hearing a surface condition rather than a worn pad. A squeal that stays after a few stops is a different story, and that one wants measuring.

Why does my car pull to one side under braking?

Usually one brake is working harder than the other. A dragging caliper or a seized slider pin holds the pad against the rotor on that side, and the car steers towards it. Measuring pad thickness left against right at each hub shows the gap and tells us whether the fault sits in the caliper or the pads. We fit pads in axle pairs, which is what keeps the pull from coming back.

What is the minimum brake pad thickness before replacement?

Manufacturer specs differ by model, so there is no one figure that covers every car. In practice 3 mm is the threshold most workshops here work to for replacement, and below 2 mm you are running close to the backing plate with the rotor starting to pay for it. We measure each pad and put the number on your report next to your car’s own minimum, so you know where you stand instead of being told “soon”.

Can I use aftermarket brake pads instead of OEM?

Yes. We stock OEM, OE-equivalent and reputable aftermarket pads, and we will talk you through what changes between them: cost, brake dust, noise and stopping power. For most Singapore daily drivers, OE-equivalent lands in the right place. If you want the manufacturer part, we will fit that instead and say what the difference buys you.

Will brake repair at an independent workshop void my manufacturer warranty?

No. Singapore’s competition regulator, the CCCS, has told authorised dealers to drop warranty terms that force you to service only at their own workshops, so you can service or repair at any qualified workshop without losing the manufacturer warranty, as long as compatible parts are used and the manufacturer’s procedures are followed. Brakes checked fine but the car still knocks over bumps?

Then it is not the brakes. A knock over humps, a ride that keeps floating after a speed bump, or tyres wearing unevenly across the tread all point at shocks, bushes or mounts instead.
