A squeal at the lights, a pedal that pulses under your foot, or the car tugging to one side every time you slow down. We measure pad and rotor thickness in millimetres, test the calipers and the fluid, then show you the readings before anyone mentions parts.

The two do meet. Worn shocks lengthen stopping distance, so when the pads and rotors measure fine and the car still feels unsettled as you brake, suspension is the next thing we look at.
Stop-start traffic wears brakes faster than the service manual assumes, and they tell you about it in three ways. Pick the one that sounds like your car.
Pad material is running thin, or the friction surface has picked up something it should not have. A squeal is a warning you still have time to act on. A grind is metal on the rotor, and by that point the rotor is paying for the delay too.

So do perfectly healthy pads that glazed over or sat on a damp rotor overnight. One needs parts, the other often needs nothing at all. Quote off the noise and you either sell someone a job they did not need or miss the one they did.

Then you get the readings and the photos and you decide. If the pads are sitting comfortably above minimum we say so and you drive off. Most brake quotes stop at pads, because pads are the quick answer. They are also often not the part causing your symptom. Every check here covers all four whether or not you came in complaining about them.

Brakes give you warning before they stop working properly. The line sits at whether the noise has turned metallic, and whether the pedal still feels the way it did last month.
If you are in the second column, say so when you book your next service and we will measure while the wheels are already off. What we would not do is wait out a grind. Roughly every 30,000 to 60,000 km, and how you drive moves that number more than the odometer does. A daily run from Kaki Bukit into the CBD is mostly stop-start, which wears pads faster than the same distance on an expressway. We measure at every service and write the reading down, so pads get changed when the pad says so rather than when the calendar does.
Not always. Where the rotor is still above minimum thickness and the surface is not scored, we change the pads and leave the rotor alone. We measure first, then show you the reading, the manufacturer minimum and a photo of the rotor face, and you decide with the numbers in front of you. Where a rotor has gone past the point of skimming, we say that plainly too.
Usually not. Glazed pads and a light surface rust on the rotor both squeal when wet. If the noise clears once the pads have warmed up and dried out, you are hearing a surface condition rather than a worn pad. A squeal that stays after a few stops is a different story, and that one wants measuring.
Usually one brake is working harder than the other. A dragging caliper or a seized slider pin holds the pad against the rotor on that side, and the car steers towards it. Measuring pad thickness left against right at each hub shows the gap and tells us whether the fault sits in the caliper or the pads. We fit pads in axle pairs, which is what keeps the pull from coming back.
Manufacturer specs differ by model, so there is no one figure that covers every car. In practice 3 mm is the threshold most workshops here work to for replacement, and below 2 mm you are running close to the backing plate with the rotor starting to pay for it. We measure each pad and put the number on your report next to your car’s own minimum, so you know where you stand instead of being told “soon”.

No. Singapore’s competition regulator, the CCCS, has told authorised dealers to drop warranty terms that force you to service only at their own workshops, so you can service or repair at any qualified workshop without losing the manufacturer warranty, as long as compatible parts are used and the manufacturer’s procedures are followed.
