Worn suspension shows up as a noise, a feel, or a tyre. Most drivers live with it for months, because the car still drives.
A knock or rattle from one corner every time you cross a speed hump or an expansion joint. Usually a stabiliser link, a tired bush or a top mount, and the fix is often smaller than drivers brace themselves for.

A stabiliser link, a lower arm bush, a top mount bearing, a ball joint, an absorber that has given up: from the driver’s seat they all sound roughly the same. That is why “your suspension is gone” gets quoted as one big number when the real fault is often one small part.
So we don’t guess. The car goes up, wheels come off where they need to, and every joint gets levered and checked for play by hand while somebody listens. Absorbers get inspected for oil weeping and bounced at each corner. Then a road test over real humps, because some knocks only turn up with weight moving through the car.
You get told what is worn, you get shown it on your own car, and you get a price before anything comes off. Nothing worn, we say so and you drive away.
The same short list applies, with two Volvo-specific suspects worth naming. On the newer XC60 and XC90, Singapore owners on forums report the upper torque rod, the engine’s steadying arm, knocking on pull-away within the first four years. It presents exactly like a suspension knock and gets checked the same way, by hand, with the load on. And on an XC90 with air suspension fitted, a corner that sits low overnight or a compressor that runs long is its own diagnosis path, message on the dash or not.

When a workshop tells you the suspension is gone, ask which part. The word covers half a dozen components that fail in different ways, at different mileages, at very different prices. Knowing which one is talking to you is most of the job.
Dampers, if you prefer. They control what the spring does after a bump. When they give up the car floats, the nose dives under braking, and grip drops in the wet because the tyre stops staying planted on the road.
They carry the weight of the car and set the ride height. Springs rarely fade gradually. They either sit fine or they crack, and a cracked one tends to announce itself with a bang and a corner that sits visibly low.
The joints and rubber that hold everything in position and keep road noise out of the cabin. This group is where most knocks come from, and it is usually the cheapest group to put right.
Singapore does not have the potholes that destroy suspension elsewhere. It has a different set of problems, and over a COE cycle they add up to the same bill.
Estate roads, carparks, school zones. Every hump cycles the absorbers and works the bushes, and most of us take them faster than we think we do.
Tight spiral ramps in multi-storey carparks load one side of the car hard. A kerb clipped on a turn sends a shock straight through the arm and into the geometry.
Most driving here is short, stop-start and loaded. Suspension does its work at low speed, over and over again, which is exactly what wears rubber out.
Bushings, boots and mounts are rubber, and rubber ages in this climate whether the car moves or not. A ten-year-old car usually needs the rubber before it needs the metal.
Alignment sets the angles your wheels point at. Suspension parts are what hold those angles in place. Replace a worn arm or bush and the angles move, which is why the two jobs keep turning up together. We do computerised 4-wheel alignment here on a Hunter system, with a before-and-after printout, so it happens in the same visit rather than at a second workshop.

Most cars here get somewhere between 80,000 and 120,000 km out of a set, and estate roads full of humps push it toward the shorter end. Age counts as much as mileage, because the rubber around them hardens in this heat. There is no service interval printed for absorbers, which is exactly why they get missed for years.
Yes, and that one catches people out. The valving inside wears long before any oil shows on the outside, so a dry absorber can still be finished. A clean body on the ramp is not a pass on its own. We bounce each corner and hold it under load, and a corner that carries on moving after the release has lost its damping whether or not there is oil on it.
Front pair or rear pair, yes. A new absorber on one side and a tired one on the other means the car behaves differently left to right, and you feel that most in an emergency swerve, which is the worst possible time to find out. All four at once is common but not always necessary, and we will tell you honestly which situation your car is in.
If we have replaced anything that holds the geometry, so lower arms, bushings, ball joints or tie rod ends, then yes. Absorbers on their own usually do not move the alignment, but if the car has been knocking for a while it is worth measuring anyway. A hard kerb or pothole hit is the other clear reason to get it checked, whether or not anything was replaced.
Depends what is knocking. A worn stabiliser link is noisy and not dangerous. A ball joint with real play in it is a different conversation, because that is the part holding your wheel to the car. That is the whole reason we look before we guess, and if something should not wait, you will hear it from us plainly.
Most of the time, yes. Levering each joint on the lift while somebody listens finds the majority of knocks, and the road test finds the rest. We do not pull parts off a car to work out whether they were the problem.
