One model year gathers most of the complaints, one gearbox sank the early cars’ reputation, and the air suspension question hangs over every listing that has the option. Below is the year-by-year picture, what each band is actually known for, and why the folder of invoices still outranks the number on the log card.
The XC90 has been on sale for over twenty years across two generations, so advice written for one band tells you close to nothing about another. The tabs below split the run the way the complaint record splits it, and each tab answers the same three questions, so you can compare bands side by side.

Air suspension was an option on the second-generation XC90 rather than standard kit, so the first check is whether the car you own or want even carries it. Where it does, the failures sort into three families, each announcing itself differently. Every panel below uses the same skeleton, so you can find yours fast.
And if your XC90 rides on the standard setup instead, the rear axle uses a transverse composite leaf spring, a part designed for durability. Rear-end clunks on those cars trace to the rubber bushes and mounts around it wearing or separating rather than to the spring itself, which puts them in ordinary suspension repair territory: found on the lift, fixed with bushes and absorbers, no air plumbing involved.
Year-by-year complaint data is real and worth reading, and it still tells you less than the folder of invoices in the glovebox. Every source that ranks XC90 years also notes how heavily the complaints overlap between the good years and the bad ones. Plenty of 2016 cars have long since been updated, repaired and settled. Plenty of sweet-spot cars have spent their lives on stretched service intervals with nobody looking underneath.
So the honest rule reads like this: a well-kept 2016 with records beats a neglected 2019, every time. The year tells you which questions to ask. The individual car answers them, and it can only answer through its history, its fault memory and a proper look on the lift.

Only the bands with a solid, documented pattern get a row. Anything thinner than that stays off the table on purpose, because a wrong row would cost you more than a missing one.
Whatever the year band turns up, the sequence is the same: the car goes on the lift, the findings come back to you with photographs of your own car behind each line, and the quote lists parts and labour separately before any work starts. Two bands carry nearly all of the caution. On the first generation, the 2003 to 2005 T6, whose GM-designed automatic gearbox failed early and often enough to draw a class action in the United States. On the second generation, model year 2016, the launch year of the all-new platform, which logged launch-year electrical and infotainment glitches and holds the highest complaint count of any XC90 year in the US NHTSA record. Builds from 2017 onward are notably more settled, and the 2019 and 2020 cars are the band cited most often as the sweet spot. None of that outranks condition, though: a well-kept 2016 with records beats a neglected 2019.
Reliable enough when healthy, and it is also the system on the car with the best-mapped failure modes. It was an option rather than standard, so first confirm the car in front of you actually has it. Where fitted, the known families are a leaking air spring letting one corner sag overnight, a compressor that runs longer and louder before it dies, and a seized compressor blowing its supply fuse so the whole system drops with “Suspension service required” on the dash. Volvo acknowledged the compressor fault in a quality bulletin covering model year 2016 to 2020 cars, tracing it to residue on an internal valve. A car that sits level after a night parked, without long pump runs, is telling you the system is healthy today.
It means the air suspension, where fitted, has shut itself down, and the classic cause is a seized compressor that has blown its supply fuse and taken the whole system offline at once. The fuse, the compressor and the wiring get checked in that order. A fresh fuse alone will simply blow again if the pump behind it has seized, so treat the message as a prompt for diagnosis rather than a part to swap.
On 2016-onward cars the commonest early cause is the upper engine torque rod mount, the brace at the top of the engine bay whose rubber wears and lets the engine rock. The giveaway is a distinct clunk or thump on acceleration, on braking, or when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. It is a small, quick, inspect-and-replace job, and often one of the first things to wear on these cars. A clunk from the rear on a coil-sprung car is a separate story, and usually traces to rubber bushes and mounts rather than the rear spring itself.
Not automatically. It holds the weakest record of the second generation because it was the first year of an all-new platform, and the recorded trouble leans toward launch-year electrical and infotainment glitches. A decade on, an example that has been kept properly, updated and repaired where needed can be a sound car at a fair discount to the later years. The year is a reason to inspect harder before you decide, and a properly documented 2016 can come out of that inspection looking better than a carelessly run 2019.
On 2016 and 2017 cars the centre screen is documented as sluggish, commonly taking seven to ten seconds to respond after a cold start, with laggy touch response and worse cases taking far longer. Successive software updates improved it without eliminating it, so the first check is whether the car’s software is current before anyone blames hardware. A screen that never wakes at all is a different symptom and worth a proper diagnostic look rather than a guess.
On the mild-hybrid cars, in the local market from around 2020, there is a 48-volt lithium battery under the boot floor and a separate small support battery. This message usually traces to that small support battery rather than the 48-volt pack, which makes it a far smaller job than the wording suggests. The two systems fault separately, so it is worth confirming with a proper test before replacing anything.
