Nearly every warm Volvo comes down to one of three families: a refrigerant leak, an electrical or climate-control fault, or the compressor itself. From the driver’s seat they feel identical. When the cold fades tells you more than how warm it gets, which is why the testing comes before the parts, and the gas bottle comes last.
The commonest early sign on these cars is a pattern, and each of the three below points somewhere different long before a gauge is connected. Pick the one that sounds like your car and send it over with the model and year.
Or warm while you idle in a queue, recovering once you pick up speed on the expressway. Most modern Volvos run a variable-displacement compressor managed by a small electronic control valve, and that valve can stick, often because wear particles inside the circuit jam it. The result is exactly this pattern. It gets misdiagnosed as a dead compressor with unfortunate regularity, and a whole compressor costs a great deal more to put right than the valve that was actually at fault.

Finding which one is leaking is the repair. The gas is just the refill.

So a Volvo that needs gas has a hole, and a regas without a leak trace is a refill with a countdown attached. Worse, the refrigerant is what moves the compressor’s oil. A system run low for long enough starves the compressor of lubrication, which is how an unfixed leak graduates into a far bigger repair than the leak ever was.
Where the hole hides matters as much as whether it exists. The condenser sits at the very front of the car, ahead of the radiator, exactly where road debris arrives. Stone strikes and the white, powdery corrosion that builds along its bottom edge and bracket welds make it a frequent leak point on the XC60, XC90 and S90, and a corroded condenser gets replaced rather than patched, because a patch on corroded aluminium rarely holds pressure for long. The evaporator fails at the opposite end of the car, inside the heater box behind the dash, and humid climates speed that corrosion up. Its signature is a trio: weak cooling, a musty smell, and gas that keeps needing top-ups. Reaching it means opening the dash, so it is the definition of a big-labour job, and precisely the diagnosis worth confirming twice before anyone commits to it.
SG owners on MyCarForum list aircon trouble among the common problems showing up on 2017 to 2021 XC60s within about three to four years of ownership, and describe the fix as a costly, multi-day affair. That reputation is mostly the labour of reaching parts, and it is exactly why the cheap step, a proper diagnosis, belongs before the expensive one. None of these faults improves by waiting, but they wait at very different speeds. Here is how to hold the line until the car is in a bay.
Start from what the car does, because the part names come later. These are the patterns and the order they get checked in the bay.
One more thing worth knowing before a regas is booked anywhere: Volvos from roughly 2016 onwards left the factory on R1234yf refrigerant rather than the older R134a. The two are not interchangeable and R1234yf needs its own equipment, which is part of what separates one regas quote from another. The sticker under the bonnet says which your car takes, and so does a message with the model and year.
A workshop that starts the conversation at the gas bottle has skipped the diagnosis. Every answer on this pad narrows the fault before a single panel comes off: the timing points at the control valve or away from it, the clicking points at an actuator, the smell points behind the dash, and how long the last regas lasted is a rough measure of how big the leak is.

Those two together, especially with gas that keeps needing top-ups, point at the evaporator core. Evaporators corrode, and humid climates plus moisture and debris settling in the housing accelerate it. Because the core sits inside the heater box behind the dash, replacing it means opening the dash, which is why it is the biggest labour job in the aircon system. That is exactly why the diagnosis deserves a proper leak trace to confirm it before anyone quotes for it. A musty smell on its own, with cooling still strong and the charge holding, is a much smaller conversation.

The diagnosis tells you which of these applies before any of them is paid for.
Better to switch it off until it is checked. A grinding or growling noise with the aircon on that stops when it is off tends to sit at the compressor end of the system, and a bearing that is breaking up can seize and take the drive belt with it, which strands the car rather than just warming it. Worth knowing too: on some first-generation XC60s a growl from the dash area was traced to the thermal expansion valve rather than the compressor, and Volvo ran a factory campaign covering the valve’s adjustment on some cars. So a noise does not automatically condemn the compressor, but it does earn a prompt look either way.
