Maserati · Singapore
Maserati ownership in Singapore is everything the badge promises, right up until the service bill arrives. We give you a workshop that actually knows these cars, so you keep the driving pleasure without the dealer price tag.
What Maseratis actually need here
These are characterful cars with Ferrari-built engines, and they ask for proper attention. Most of what comes in clusters around the V6 and V8 engines, the ZF gearbox and the air suspension. Here’s what we see most, and on cars like these, catching it early is the difference between a service and a strip-down.
The 3.0 twin-turbo V6 that Ferrari developed for Maserati is an impressive engine, but it has its quirks. Valve-cover and front crankshaft seal weeping is commonly reported on higher-mileage cars, and the variable valve timing can wear and show up as a rough cold start or a rattle before oil pressure builds. Our stop-start traffic and short trips, where the engine never fully warms through, seem to speed both along. Catch either early and you save real money; left alone, the variator job becomes a much bigger strip-down.
This is the job that makes owners wince most. The older Ferrari-derived V8 in the 4200-series and the fifth-gen Quattroporte runs a timing chain system with variators that need replacing at intervals most owners don’t know about until something rattles or the car throws codes. At the authorised dealer here the parts and labour are eye-watering. An experienced independent using quality OEM-equivalent components can do the same repair for far less, and these cars are well past warranty age, so there’s no reason to go to the agent.
The ZF 8HP is a good gearbox when it’s set up properly, but Maserati’s calibration draws complaints: a low-speed jolt pulling away, hesitation on light throttle in Sport mode, and the odd reluctance to hold a gear. Some of it is software, some is learned adaptation that gets confused by varied driving. A transmission fluid service and, where needed, a control-unit reset can bring back much cleaner shifts. Worth doing before assuming the gearbox has a mechanical fault.
Both the Levante and later Quattroporte offer air suspension, and in our heat and humidity the compressor and bag system can age faster than a low-mileage car would suggest. A corner that sits low overnight, a warning light on startup, or a noticeably harsher ride are the early signs. Compressor units aren’t cheap, and the job carries a premium at the agent. Catching a failing height sensor or air line before the compressor burns out trying to compensate is the smart move.
The MTC infotainment in pre-2020 Maseratis is known for lock-ups, slow boot times, Bluetooth dropouts and, in worse cases, a standby draw that flattens the battery if the car sits for a week or two. Our cars run the aircon almost every trip, which adds electrical load and can surface latent issues sooner. Software updates help where they’re available, though some units eventually need a head-unit replacement. Finding the real root cause before throwing parts at it saves money.
The cabin is a big part of why you bought the car, but some of the interior plastics and switchgear aren’t as hard-wearing as the badge suggests, and our heat and humidity find that out fast. The soft-touch rubberised coating on buttons, the gear surround and trim panels can turn sticky or start peeling, while small switches, vents and clips wear or crack over the years. Affected pieces can be re-coated or replaced, and we’ll tell you which makes sense for yours rather than leaving you with a gluey centre console.

Maserati was founded in Bologna in 1914 and has built its cars in Modena since 1939, and that heritage shows in how these cars feel on the road. It also means the engines and drivetrains are complex, with close ties to Ferrari parts bins that were never designed for budget servicing. We’ve put in the time on the V6 and V8 families, the ZF transmission calibration and the air suspension, so we’re not learning on your car. We use proper diagnostic tooling that reads Maserati-specific fault codes, not just generic OBD, because on these cars the difference between a real fault and a logged event you can clear matters.
Parts through the official channel can mean long lead times and high markup. We work with established European OEM and OEM-equivalent suppliers, so you get the right part without the inflated agent price, and we’ll always tell you which route we’re taking before we order. The quote is itemised and you get the old parts back.
Set for Singapore driving
Maserati’s official intervals are typically 12 months or a set mileage, whichever comes first. Here, where many of these cars cover low annual mileage in stop-start traffic, the calendar matters more than the odometer. Short trips mean the engine rarely reaches full temperature, which builds moisture and acid in the oil faster than the mileage suggests.
How we quote
It depends on the engine, the model and what the car actually needs. A Ghibli minor service and a Quattroporte major aren’t the same job, and a V8 timing job is different again, so a flat price would just be a guess. We look at the car, tell you what it needs and what it’ll cost, in writing, before we touch anything.
We won’t tell you we’re the cheapest. What we stand behind is the quality of the work, how we treat you, and taking responsibility when it’s ours to take. The quote is itemised, you get the old parts back, and nothing happens that you didn’t approve.
Independent or the agent?
Singapore’s competition regulator made every authorised dealer drop the clause that tied servicing to them, back in 2017, and reminded them again in 2024. The only way the agent can turn down a warranty claim is to prove our work caused that exact fault. Keep your records and use the right parts, and your cover stands.
The bigger draw with a Maserati is cost. Dealer parts and labour on these run high, and most of the cars on the road here are out of warranty anyway. We read the same faults with proper Maserati diagnostics, quote before we start, and there’s no diagnostic fee just to get an answer.
The 10-year decision
Around year nine the decision lands on every Singapore owner: put a big sum into renewing the COE, or scrap a car you’ve driven for a decade. It’s one of the most expensive calls you’ll make, and the person selling you a new car isn’t the one to ask.
On a Maserati it’s a condition question first. A Ghibli that’s been properly maintained with no major deferred work is a very different proposition from one on ageing tyres, a marginal battery and pending variator issues. We can do a pre-COE health check that shows what you’d be renewing into, what’s in good shape, what needs attention soon, and a realistic cost, so you decide with full information rather than guesswork.
Bring it in before you decide and we’ll give you the honest picture. We don’t sell COEs and we don’t sell new cars, so we’ve no reason to push you either way.
Why owners bring their Maserati to us
We use proper Maserati-specific diagnostic tooling, not just a generic OBD reader, so on these cars we can tell a real fault from a logged event you can clear. We know the V6 and V8 families, the ZF calibration and the air suspension well enough to read them properly. We explain it in plain language. And it’s one team for the service, the repair, the insurance and the claim if it ever comes to that, so you’re not bouncing between five numbers.
