A shudder pulling away, a pause before the car actually moves, or a gearbox warning sitting on the dash. Before anyone talks about a mechatronic unit, we work out which of the two S tronic families is bolted to your Audi, because a transverse A3 and a quattro A6 are not fixed the same way.
Audi puts the same three words on the gear selector of a front-drive A1 and a quattro A6, and that is where most confusion starts. Underneath, the gearbox sits either across the engine bay or in line with it, and that one detail decides which unit you have, whether its clutches run dry or in oil, and what the fix actually looks like.
One more box gets dragged into this conversation that has no business being there. Multitronic, badged 0AW, is a continuously variable transmission that Audi fitted to front-drive A4 and A6 cars until around 2016, driven by a chain and a pair of variable pulleys rather than a pair of clutches. It has no clutch pack and no mechatronic unit in the sense this page means, and calling it S tronic is an easy mistake to make and an easy one to correct off the vehicle data sticker.
The badge on the boot will not tell you and the gear selector looks identical either way. The rows below match model, layout and years to the unit, and where a car sits on a changeover we confirm it off the build data rather than the badge.
Send us the full chassis number, or a photo of the vehicle data sticker in the boot well, and we will confirm the box before you drive over. The gearbox code sits on that sticker as a three-letter code, and it is not something anyone can read off part of a chassis number alone.
A shake through the floor as the car takes up drive from a standstill, worst in crawling traffic and on a slope. Most common on the dry DQ200, though a wet box past its oil service can do the same thing.
The car hesitates before it actually moves, particularly from reverse or a cold start, then engages with a knock rather than a smooth take-up. This is a mechatronic or clutch-pack complaint far more often than a wear item.
The dash shows a gearbox fault and the car often locks itself into one ratio to protect the unit. Not an automatic write-off of the box, but not something to keep driving on for weeks either.
On the DQ200, the dry clutch pack and the mechatronic sit in one housing with a small hydraulic accumulator doing the work a wet box asks its oil pressure to do. That accumulator loses its charge over time, the clutch adaptation figures drift with it, and the result feels exactly like a worn clutch from the driver’s seat, whether or not the clutch itself has actually worn.
On the DL501, the mechatronic and the clutch pack are separate wear items sitting inside a unit that runs everything in oil. A tired mechatronic gives you slow or harsh shifts under load, while a worn clutch pack gives you slip and a burning smell on a hard pull. A twin-clutch box is always learning where its clutches bite, and those learned values wander as parts age or after the battery has been off the car. Wandered figures produce the same shudder a worn part does, so we rule that out first rather than last.

The DQ250, DQ381, DL501 and DL382 all want fresh fluid and a new filter around every 60,000km. Skip it and harsh, snatchy shifts turn up long before anything actually breaks.

It is the gearbox’s own control electronics and its hydraulics built into a single assembly. One half decides which gear the car should be in and how quickly the change happens. The other half, a block of solenoids and oil passages, sends pressure to the clutch taking up drive. Because the two are sold as one part, a fault in either gets called a mechatronic failure, which is why that one word can mean several quite different repairs.
A short, careful drive to somewhere safe, yes. Beyond that, we would not. The car has usually locked itself into a single gear to protect the unit, which leaves you with very little engine braking and an unpredictable car at a junction. If reverse has already gone, think about where you park it. Get the fault memory read within the week rather than the month, because a pressure fault left running keeps working the clutch pack.
You cannot tell from the driver’s seat, and we cannot either until the box has been read. Both faults produce the identical shake through the floor. What separates them is the stored adaptation figures, how the car behaves once those are reset, and whether the fault tracks load, temperature or neither. That check runs to roughly an hour, which is considerably less than a clutch pack fitted on a guess.

Roughly every 60,000km for the DQ250, DQ381, DL501 and DL382, and a good number of owners here have never had it done. The dry DQ200 has no equivalent item for its clutch pack, though its separate mechatronic housing carries a small amount of its own fluid. If your Audi is on a quattro longitudinal box or a bigger transverse engine and the gearbox oil has never been touched, that is the first place worth checking.
