A judder from a standstill, a bang into gear, or a gearbox warning on the dash: all three get called “the DSG is gone,” and they are three different repairs with three different bills. This page is about telling them apart before anyone writes a quote, and about what actually pushes the number up once we know.
Three genuinely different repairs hide behind the same complaint. Below is what points toward each one, what we check before agreeing with you, roughly how long the car is actually with us, and what that route will not fix if we have called it wrong.

The mechatronic is the electronic half of the assembly, a control unit that works out which gear the car should be in and how quickly to get there. Bolted directly onto it is the clutch pack, a pair of discs physically taking up the drive. VW built both into a single assembly and gave the whole thing one name, which is exactly why “the DSG is gone” can mean an hour of work or a proper strip-down, depending on which half actually failed.
Every DSG, dry or wet, is constantly learning where its clutches bite. That learned data drifts as parts wear, after the 12V battery has been disconnected, or simply with age and heat cycling, and poor values on their own can make a perfectly sound gearbox shudder and hesitate. That is the entire reason a relearn comes first on this page. It is not the cheap option we would rather sell you; it is that a genuine share of the shudders that reach us turn out to be exactly this and nothing more.
The dry DQ200 keeps K1 and K2 running in open air, which is fine at speed and miserable at a walking pace. Ten minutes of stop-start on the PIE, or queuing out of a packed HDB carpark ramp, holds the clutch slipping at exactly the speed it copes with worst, and that heat cycle wears the friction material down faster than the odometer alone would suggest. A car driven mostly on open roads can pass 100,000km without the clutch pack needing a look. A car that spends most of its life nose-to-tail in town can wear one out at a fraction of that distance.
Wear is measured, not guessed. The box reports how far each clutch actuator has had to travel to find the bite point, and that travel figure creeps upward as the friction material thins. Once it passes the tolerance VW sets for the unit, no amount of resetting brings it back, and the pack gets replaced as its own job, with its own parts, sitting on its own line on the quote rather than hidden inside a bigger number.
Sitting inside the unit is a small hydraulic accumulator, a pressure reservoir that keeps oil fed evenly to the clutches between pump strokes. When its seal starts to go, pressure to one clutch wanders before the driver notices anything. Reverse tends to go first, or one of the odd-numbered gears, because each hangs off its own circuit rather than a shared main line, and a single failed circuit takes out exactly the gears it feeds and nothing else.
Push that fault further and the gearbox protects itself: it drops into an emergency mode, holds one ratio, and puts a message up on the dash rather than let you keep driving on a fault it no longer trusts. That message deserves a proper read with the right equipment rather than a clear-and-hope, because it usually names the exact circuit that has given up before a single bolt gets undone.
Audi, Skoda and SEAT share these same units under different badges, so the pattern below holds across the wider VAG range, beyond cars wearing a VW badge. The Golf Mk7 page and the Tiguan page set out which box came with which engine on those two models.

Clutches run submerged in oil, so heat is far less of an enemy here. Skip the fluid change long enough and it shows up first as harsh, snatchy shifts, well before anything actually fails.

A mechatronic repair or a quality exchange unit settles most of these jobs on its own. A full gearbox swap is the right answer far less often than the phrase gets thrown around.
We say which side of that line your car sits on, with the evidence from the road test and the fault memory in front of you, rather than a number read off a spreadsheet before the car has moved.
A DSG job on a car nearing its tenth year changes the maths, and there is no single correct answer to hand you. Renewing the COE commits you to more years of motoring on a gearbox that has just shown it can fail; scrapping resets that particular risk but gives up the PARF rebate on a car that might otherwise run well for years past the repair. It depends on what else the car needs, how many years you actually want out of it, and whether the rest of the car is ageing at the same rate as the gearbox.
We would rather have that conversation with you before the mechatronic comes off than hand you a bill and let you work it out afterwards.
Every wet DSG, the DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500 alike, wants fresh fluid and a new filter at roughly the 60,000km mark. It rarely comes up because nobody mentions it at the agent visit, and by the time the shifts turn harsh and snatchy the fluid has usually been carrying debris through the valve body for a while already. The dry DQ200 has no equivalent service for its clutches, though its own mechatronic housing carries a small charge of fluid that a specialist should still check.
If your gearbox oil has never once been touched and the car is a GTI, an R, a Tiguan, or anything else running a wet box, that is the cheapest item on this whole page, and it heads off most of what comes before it. Three letters, DSG, cover both a one-hour relearn and a job where the whole unit leaves the car, so any number given before your car has turned a wheel on our ramp is a guess wearing a decimal point.
Certain mechatronic failures live in a section of the unit that can genuinely be stripped and rebuilt. Others come out ahead with a quality exchange unit instead, and a brand new assembly rarely earns its place unless the housing itself is cracked or damaged.
Reaching the mechatronic is a bolt-on job on some models and means dropping the gearbox off the engine on others. Same part number, wildly different labour time sitting beside it.
A worn clutch pack is its own job with its own parts. Where the wear figures say it needs doing alongside the mechatronic, it appears as its own line on the quote.
A repaired or exchange unit does not simply bolt on and go. It has to be coded to your car specifically, then taught where its clutches bite through real driving, and that is genuine time that earns its own line instead of hiding inside labour.
When it happens, cold or hot, from rest or mid-shift, and whether reverse is affected. That detail narrows the search before the car even moves.

From the driver’s seat, no, and we cannot either until the fault memory and the clutch wear values have actually been read. Both faults feel identical through the car: the same shudder, the same hesitation. What actually tells them apart is data, specifically how far each clutch actuator has travelled to find its bite point, and whether the trouble clears after a relearn or is back within days.
Both routes exist, and the fault itself decides which applies to your car. Several mechatronic failures are well understood, documented enough that a specialist can strip and correct them properly. That depends on the rest of the car and how many more years you want from it, not on a fixed rule anyone can quote you. Renewing the COE on a car with a freshly repaired gearbox can make sense if everything else is sound. Scrapping and giving up the PARF rebate can make sense if the DSG is one of several ageing systems. We would rather talk that through with you before the job starts than after.
No. The authorised dealers agreed in 2017 to take out the warranty terms that tied servicing to their own workshops, and the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore wrote to them again in 2024 to repeat it. You can service or repair at any competent independent workshop without losing the manufacturer warranty, so long as the parts fitted are compatible and the correct procedure is followed on the day. That is simply how we operate, and the written report we hand you doubles as proof if the warranty is ever queried.
The boot lid badge will not tell you either, and it stops being reliable altogether once a model sits on a changeover year. Broadly, the smaller-engined Polo, Golf and Jetta run the dry DQ200, while GTI, R, Tiguan and Passat models run a wet DQ250, DQ381 or DQ500 depending on the year.
