The B8, the facelifted B8.5, the B9 and the B9 facelift are four different cars under one nameplate, with different engines, different gearboxes and a different fault history apiece. Work out which one is sitting in your carpark from the timeline below, then read only the sections that apply to it.
Audi kept the A4 badge for the best part of two decades and changed almost everything else underneath it twice. An early B8 and a facelifted B9 share a name, a broadly similar shape and very little else that a mechanic cares about. Find your car below before you read a single fault.
1.8 and 2.0 TFSI four-cylinders, plus the supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6 and the parallel-import S4 and RS4. Front-drive cars ran a CVT; quattro cars ran a seven-speed twin-clutch instead.
The one fault to knowThe four-cylinder uses more oil than it should and stretches its timing chain tensioner. Both get measured, not guessed at.
The same two engine sizes carried on, but the 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI moved to a revised design partway through, alongside a sharper LED look front and rear.

A 1.4 TFSI joined the range on front-drive cars, alongside a further-revised 2.0 TFSI. The CVT disappeared everywhere in favour of a wet-clutch twin-clutch box, quattro or not.

Both badges now carry a 12-volt mild hybrid system built around a belt-driven starter-generator, plus a newer MMI touchscreen and a sharper set of headlights.

Ask two A4 owners about their gearbox and you can get two completely different answers, and both can be right. Audi fitted three separate automatic designs across this nameplate, and only one of them disappeared for good at the change to the B9.
Audi’s S tronic and Volkswagen’s DSG describe the same twin-clutch idea, but the longitudinal DL501 and DL382 fitted here are not the transverse gearboxes bolted into a Golf or a Polo, so advice written for one does not transfer cleanly onto the other. None of the following is a certainty and none of it arrives on a fixed schedule. They are the areas with a track record on this nameplate, and which ones apply to your car depends entirely on which A4 you have.
Cars built before the B8.5 facelift use more oil than the handbook suggests, and tired piston rings alongside a crankcase breather that lets oil into the intake are usually behind it. A stretched timing chain tensioner tends to follow the same cars. Both get measured rather than argued about.
Where engine work goes → 02From the B8.5 facelift onward, the pump and thermostat share one plastic housing bolted to the side of the block. The joint weeps long before anything reaches the floor of your carpark, so a coolant tank you keep topping up wants a pressure test rather than another bottle.
Pump and thermostat, in full → 03The chain-driven CVT on front-drive cars shows its manners worst pulling away from a dead stop on a slope. A shudder is not automatically the variator failing, and reading what the control unit has stored comes before any parts get ordered.

A wandered figure feels identical to a worn part from the driver’s seat, and only one of the two is a parts job.

Two facts settle most of what has come before this section: which EA888 generation is under the bonnet, and which of the three gearboxes above is bolted behind it. Neither is written anywhere on the boot lid.
None of this makes the A4 a fragile car. Audi sold enormous numbers of both generations worldwide, and most of what troubles one here is what troubles the wider Volkswagen Group range it shares parts with, turbocharged four-cylinders and twin-clutch gearboxes included.
What our climate changes is the cool half of the cycle a temperate country gives a car. A plastic coolant housing, a clutch pack running in oil and the oil sitting in the sump all age against heat, and Singapore never hands any of them a season to recover in.
A commute measured in single-digit kilometres finishes the job. The oil never gets properly hot, a clutch pack spends its life slipping at walking pace rather than locking up at speed, and an intake valve sits in exactly the temperature band where carbon likes to form. None of that shows up on the odometer.

Nobody can price an A4 without seeing it, so nothing below pretends to. Two cars from the same year can sit a long way apart once someone looks underneath, and a figure quoted before anyone has seen your car is a guess with a decimal point attached.
The Gen 2, Gen 3 and Gen 3B EA888 share a name and very little else. The cam drive, the cooling layout and the known weak points all shift between them, so identical wording on a job sheet can hide different parts.
A Multitronic has its own fluid and its own control unit. An S tronic running wet has a fluid and filter on the schedule. Neither one gets serviced on the other’s interval, and plenty of owners were never told either interval existed.
Two cars, same year, same reading on the odometer. One did long steady runs and the other did three kilometres at a time. The second is an older car in every way that matters, and the oil shows it before anything else does.
Stamps prove a visit happened. They do not prove the gearbox fluid was ever touched, the coolant tested rather than glanced at, or the brake fluid measured. Where the record is thin, the first proper look takes longer, and we say so before you book.
A job with the front of the engine apart, or the subframe dropped, puts parts within reach that would otherwise cost separate labour to get to. Replacing something tired at that moment costs almost no extra hours, so we split the list and you choose from it.
Nearly everything on this page is cheaper caught early and dearer left alone. A weep turns into an overheat. A shudder that started as a software question turns into a clutch pack. The gap between the two versions of the same repair is usually wide.
The quote is written before any work begins, with parts and labour on separate lines and a timeline beside them. Every line carries a photograph of your own car, so what you approve is something you have looked at rather than something you were told. If the job turns out to be a different one once we are inside it, the work stops and the phone rings.
Most of what matters across both generations shows itself in the first ten minutes, provided you insist on the right ten minutes. None of the following needs a workshop, and all of it is worth doing before you talk about price.
Ask that nobody warms the car up before you get there. The first half minute carries the stumble, the rattle and the puff of smoke, and every one of those hides once the engine is hot.
Both Multitronic and a wet S tronic show their manners moving off uphill from a dead stop rather than on flat tarmac. Do it going forward, then reverse up a carpark ramp, and feel for a shake through the floor.
The level on the stick matters less than the answer you get. An owner who tops it up between services and tells you so is being straight with you. One who has never looked has told you something else.
On any B8.5 or B9, run your eye down the side of the engine for a chalky deposit near the pump and thermostat housing. A slow weep bakes off before it can drip, so a clean floor proves very little on its own.
Cycle through the MMI screens, every window and both door mirrors while the car is still cold. A module that hesitates or a screen that blanks briefly is worth noting before you sign anything.
A proper pre-purchase inspection on an A4 takes a couple of hours and covers what the gearbox has stored, the underside and whether the record matches the car. It is the cheapest part of buying one.
As a nameplate, yes, and reliability on a car this age is mostly a maintenance story rather than a luck one. The B8 and the B9 share their engines and gearboxes with a very large number of other Volkswagen Group cars, so the weak points are well documented and the parts are not exotic. What separates a good example from a tiring one is whether the oil and gearbox fluid were changed on a sensible interval.
Multitronic is Audi’s own continuously variable transmission, fitted only to front-drive four-cylinder B8 and B8.5 cars, using a chain-driven variator instead of fixed gear ratios. S tronic is a twin-clutch gearbox, fitted to every quattro B8 and B8.5 and to every four-cylinder B9, and it runs its clutch packs in oil. The two share no parts, no service interval and no failure pattern, so knowing which is behind your engine matters before anyone quotes for either.
We would not put it as a year to avoid. Each generation runs for several years and Audi revised parts throughout, so a later car has usually had more known items addressed before it left the factory. The B8 is now well past the point where most owners have made their COE renewal decision, while the pre-facelift B9 is approaching it. Buy the individual car rather than the year, and send us the details of the one you are considering.
It depends on the engine, not the generation. Every 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI EA888 fitted to the A4, Gen 2 through to the facelifted B9, drives its camshafts with a chain, so none of them has a belt interval waiting. The exception is the 1.4 TFSI introduced on the B9, which uses a belt like the smaller EA211 engines elsewhere in the range. On a front-drive B8 or B8.5, that is usually the Multitronic CVT taking up drive badly. On a quattro car or any B9, it is the S tronic’s wet clutch doing the same thing. Neither symptom automatically means worn hardware: both gearboxes store adaptation figures that wander with age and after the battery has been off, feeling identical to a worn part. Reading what the control unit has stored and a real road test separates the two.
No. Singapore’s competition regulator, the CCCS, had the major authorised dealers remove the warranty terms that tied servicing to their own workshops after its 2017 car parts market inquiry, and wrote to dealers again in February 2024 to clear out any that remained. A dealer can reject a claim only by showing that the independent work actually caused the fault being claimed, so compatible parts and the manufacturer’s procedures still matter.
