A coolant warning that keeps coming back has a short list of causes on these engines, and one cause leads it. A coolant warning that returns a fortnight after you topped the tank up, a sweet smell hanging around the bonnet after a run, or dry pink crust down the side of the engine. First thing that happens is a pressure test, not a parts order.
Cooling faults on these engines rarely announce themselves with steam. They turn up as a level that keeps falling and a smell you cannot quite place. Find the one that matches your car and send it over.
You filled the expansion tank, the light went out, and a fortnight later it is back on the dash. Nothing on the floor of the car park, nothing dripping off the subframe. A weep from the pump housing lands on hot metal and evaporates within seconds, so the level falls and leaves you no evidence at all.

Audi coolant is pink, so a slow seep bakes onto hot metal and dries into a chalky deposit instead of pooling anywhere. Follow that deposit upward and it usually ends at the joint between the pump housing and the block.

Both point at the thermostat, which lives inside the same casting as the pump. One is a valve stuck open, the other is a valve that has stopped opening on cue.
Tell us what it does →Audi and Volkswagen build the water pump and the thermostat into one plastic module on the Gen 3 EA888 four-cylinder. It is a tidy piece of engineering. A small belt inside the housing drives the pump off the exhaust camshaft, and a valve in the same casting decides how much coolant goes round the engine and how much heads for the radiator. Fewer parts and a quicker warm-up.
The catch is where that plastic has to live. Coolant at working temperature runs hot, the alloy block it bolts to expands at a different rate to the housing, and every drive puts the joint through the cycle again. After enough cycles the casting takes a set, the sealing face stops sitting flat against the block, and coolant starts finding its way out in quantities far too small to drip. That is the weep owners spend months chasing.
Our weather removes the recovery time the design was drawn around. No cold morning shrinks everything back here, the bonnet is warm before you have left the estate, and heat soak keeps the housing hot for a good while after you switch off. Add the crawl along the CTE, where a fan is doing the work that road speed does everywhere else, and the module spends its life closer to the limit than it would in Germany.
The supercharged 3.0 V6 is laid out differently. Its coolant pump and thermostat sit down in the V of the engine rather than out on the side of the block, which puts them under the supercharger, so the blower comes off before anyone can reach them. Same fault, a completely different afternoon. The badge on the boot tells us less than the engine code does, and almost nobody has that to hand. Match your model and year to a row and you will know which version of this job you are looking at.

That goes double for the newer turbocharged V6 cars and for the S and SQ models, where the layout is not the one described above and we would rather confirm yours than guess at it. It is also worth knowing what “coolant checked at every service” usually means, because on most invoices it means somebody looked at the level in the expansion tank and topped it up. It does not mean the system was held under pressure, and it does not mean the coolant itself was tested for strength or contamination. Both of those sit inside how we service a car, and they are what catches this fault a year before it strands anybody.
Both get quoted in Singapore and they finish in very different places. Here is how we choose between them, and what gets checked before either one reaches paper.
Before either of those, the system gets held under pressure while the engine is cold and we watch the gauge. A joint that only weeps at temperature still gives itself away under a steady load, and dye in the coolant shows exactly where it emerges once the engine has warmed. Hoses, radiator seams, the expansion tank, its cap and the oil cooler all get checked in the same pass, because the pump is the usual answer and not the only one. No module gets ordered on a hunch. If your cooling system holds pressure, we say so and you keep your money.
The system gets pumped up while everything is cold and then left alone. A gauge that bleeds down proves there is a leak before anyone has gone looking, and how quickly it bleeds hints at the size.
Coolant dye and a UV lamp pin down the exact spot once the engine is up to temperature and the joint has opened. Seeing it beats deducing it, and the photograph goes to you.
Hoses, radiator, expansion tank, cap and oil cooler get their own look in the same session. Pumps are common, and that is exactly why we check the alternatives rather than assume.
Warm-up gets timed and the coolant temperature watched as it climbs and then holds. A valve stuck part open shows itself here even on a car whose pump is perfectly dry.
Parts and labour kept apart, with the number of days we need the car. You look at pictures of your engine and decide from there, and nothing begins until you say yes.
Module, clean sealing faces, any hose that was clearly on its way out, and the right coolant. The system is vacuum filled so no air pocket is left behind to cook a brand new pump, and the old part goes home in the boot.
There is no figure on this page and there is a reason for it. The same handful of words describes a morning on an A3 and most of a week on a supercharged V6, and a range spanning both would only mislead you. What we can hand over is every lever that moves it.
On the four-cylinder TFSI the module bolts to the side of the block and comes off from above with the right tools. On a supercharged V6 it hides under the blower, and reaching it is most of the bill. The part itself costs roughly what it costs either way.
Sometimes only the thermostat side has failed and the pump is bone dry. Sometimes the coolant flange behind the module has cracked as well and that has to come off too. You see which before either goes on the quote.
These engines take a specific coolant, and topping up with whatever was on the shelf changes what is circulating in there. Mixed, cloudy or gone brown means a flush joins the list rather than a straight refill.
Hoses, clips, the auxiliary pump and the belt run around the module all sit open while the job is. Something already tired costs you labour you have paid for anyway. Something healthy stays exactly where it is.
A car that has already boiled needs the head gasket question settled before anything gets fitted, since a fresh pump into a compromised engine solves nothing. The check is quick and it saves people from spending twice.
Vacuum filling takes longer than pouring coolant in and squeezing the top hose until the bubbles stop. It is also the difference between a repair that holds and an air lock that brings the car back next month.
Every line on the quote has a photograph sitting behind it, with parts and labour kept apart so you can see which is which. If the picture changes once the module is off the block, the car stops there and you get a phone call rather than a larger number at collection. Whatever comes off travels home with you.
Because the leak is landing on something hot. A weep from the pump module runs onto the block or across towards the exhaust side and boils off within seconds, which is why the tank keeps dropping while the car park stays clean. It is also why a quick look under the bonnet usually finds nothing worth reporting. Holding the system under pressure while the engine is cold takes heat out of the equation, and the leak has nowhere left to hide.
Dried coolant. Audi and Volkswagen use a pink or violet coolant, and when it seeps slowly the water in it evaporates and leaves the additives behind as a chalky deposit. The crust maps the path it took, so the highest point of the trail sits closest to the source. Photograph it before anyone cleans it off. A workshop that washes the engine down first has just thrown away the best clue on the car.
On the four-cylinder TFSI engines, a day or so once the parts are in hand, and occasionally less. The supercharged V6 runs considerably longer because of everything that has to come off before the module is even in reach, and that stretches into the better part of a week. The timeline goes in writing alongside the quote, and we say up front if a part has to be ordered in rather than pulled off a shelf here.
To get to a workshop, usually yes. As a way of life, no. A slow weep does not stay slow, and it never picks a convenient moment to stop being slow. Losing coolant ends with an engine running hot, and an engine running hot ends with a head gasket at best. Keep an eye on the level, watch the temperature reading on the way in, and if it goes anywhere above where it normally sits, pull over and call us instead of pressing on.
On the EA888 engines they are not really separate items to begin with. The thermostat sits inside the same plastic module as the pump, so that housing comes off whichever of the two has actually failed. Splitting the work means paying the labour twice, and the survivor is the same age as the part that just gave up. On the V6 layout the two are not always one assembly, and there we quote only what is actually wrong.
No. Singapore’s competition regulator, the CCCS, had the major authorised dealers remove the warranty terms that tied servicing to their own workshops after its 2017 car parts market inquiry, and wrote to dealers again in February 2024 to clear out any that remained. A dealer can reject a claim only by showing that the independent work actually caused the fault being claimed, so compatible parts and the manufacturer’s procedures still matter. Sooner than the handbook suggests, because the handbook was not written for this climate. Coolant does not wear out the way oil does, but the corrosion inhibitors mixed into it get used up, and heat uses them up faster. Once they are gone the fluid starts working against the alloy and the plastic instead of protecting them. We test the strength and the condition rather than going by the calendar, then tell you what came back.
It follows the EA888 four-cylinder TFSI family more closely than anything else, which covers a wide slice of the A3, A4, A5, A6, Q3 and Q5 range from roughly 2008 onward. The early version is known for the impeller working loose on its shaft. The later one is known for the housing weeping at the joint. Volkswagen Group has revised the part more than once and the newer modules do last better, but the material and the position have stayed put.
