Two workshops can look at the same car and quote $180 and $600 for a battery, and both can be telling you the truth. What separates the numbers is the type of battery going in, and whether anyone checked the charging system before selling you a part. Buy on the headline figure alone and there’s a decent chance you’ll be back inside a year with the same problem and a second invoice.
The short version
- Three types are on the shelf here: conventional flooded (typically $150 to $280 fitted), EFB (around $300 to $450) and AGM (roughly $450 to $900 for common sizes)
- Your car decides which one, not your budget. A plain flooded battery in a start-stop car is the most expensive way to save a couple of hundred dollars

Two quotes, $180 and $600, both of them honest
A car battery is one of the few parts where the wrong one physically fits. It bolts in, the terminals reach, the engine starts, and you drive away happy. Nothing about the moment of fitting tells you whether it was the right choice.
Three things move a battery quote. Chemistry, meaning which of the three constructions you’re getting, can triple the number on its own. Your car’s tray and charging system set the case size, the terminal layout and the rating. And then there’s whether the new battery needs registering electronically, a step that costs money and gets quietly dropped from cheap quotes.
So a quote that says “car battery, fitted, from $180” isn’t really a quote. Ask which type, what capacity and cold-cranking rating, what the warranty covers, and whether registration is included. If nobody can answer that, keep calling.
The three types, and what each one is actually built for
Almost every petrol or diesel car here runs a 12-volt lead-acid battery, and within that there are three constructions. They exist because cars started asking very different things of the battery as start-stop systems and heavier electrical loads became normal.
Conventional flooded is the original design: lead plates in liquid electrolyte. It delivers one big shove of current to the starter motor, then spends the drive being topped back up by the alternator. It does that job well and cheaply. What it hates is being drained deeply and repeatedly.
EFB, enhanced flooded battery, is the same idea with tougher plates and additives that let it survive far more shallow charge and discharge cycles. It was made for entry-level start-stop systems, where the engine keeps cutting out at lights and the battery carries the car’s electronics on its own until it restarts.
AGM, absorbent glass mat, holds the electrolyte in a fibreglass mat pressed between the plates instead of sloshing around as liquid. Sealed, far more cycle-tolerant, and quicker to accept a charge. Cars with heavier electrical demands and more aggressive start-stop systems are specified with AGM from the factory, and many won’t behave properly with anything less.
Prices move with the car, the brand, the size and the warranty attached, so treat any published range as typical Singapore independent-workshop pricing rather than a menu.
Fitting a cheaper type than your car was designed for
This is the most common and most expensive mistake, and it happens because the cheap battery works at first.
Picture a start-stop car in evening traffic on the PIE. Every time you stop the engine shuts down, and for those thirty or sixty seconds the battery alone runs the aircon blower, the headlights and every module in the car, then has to crank the engine back to life. Repeat that dozens of times on the way home. A conventional flooded battery was never built for that duty cycle and its plates shed material under it. It’ll start your car for a while, then start it slowly, then one morning it won’t.
There’s a second cost owners don’t see coming. Plenty of cars monitor battery condition and quietly switch start-stop off when the reading looks weak, so you’ve paid for a system you no longer get. Owners assume the feature has broken. Usually it hasn’t.
Going the other way, fitting AGM where the car only asked for EFB, does no harm. You’re paying more than the car needs unless you’ve added electrical load. Hardwired dashcam on parking mode, or a subwoofer: that upgrade earns its keep. Otherwise match the spec and pocket the difference.
What actually decides which battery fits
Case size and terminal layout come first, and both are physical. The two ratings follow, and only one of them is the number people usually ask about.
- Case size. It has to sit in the tray and clear the bonnet. Group sizes are standardised, and a battery that’s close but not right will rock in the tray or foul something above it.
- Terminal layout. Positive on the left or the right, plus post diameter. Get it backwards and the cables have to be stretched to reach, which is how connections end up loose.
- Capacity, in amp hours. How much energy it holds, which matters most for cars that sit parked for days or run loads with the engine off.
- Cold cranking amps. How hard it can shove the starter motor. Your car’s specification gives a minimum, not a target to beat.
That last one catches people out. A bigger CCA number sounds like better value and sellers lean on it, but your car’s charging system was calibrated for a particular battery and doesn’t reward oversizing. On a short-trip car an oversized battery never reaches full charge, which is exactly the condition that shortens lead-acid life.
One thing worth checking yourself: the hold-down clamp. A battery that isn’t clamped properly vibrates over speed humps until the internal plates crack. Our tyres and battery walkthrough shows what to look at while you’re under the bonnet.
Registration and coding: the step that gets dropped
Most cars built in the last decade have a battery monitoring sensor on the negative terminal and a charging strategy that adapts as the battery ages, pushing more charge in to compensate for wear. Fit a new battery without telling the car and it carries on with the old profile, overcharging a healthy new battery for months.
Registering, or coding, tells the car it has a fresh battery, and on some makes which type and capacity went in. It typically runs $50 to $150 where the car needs it. Skipping it produces no warning light and no obvious fault, which is exactly why it gets skipped. It just quietly takes a year or two off the part you paid for.
Not every car needs this. Plenty of older Japanese cars have no battery sensor at all and a swap really is a ten-minute job. Ask before the work, because “does my car need the battery registered” has a yes or no answer for your model, and any workshop that fits batteries should be able to check.

How long a battery really lasts in Singapore
The lifespan figures quoted on overseas sites come from temperate markets and they don’t transfer here. Heat is harder on a lead-acid battery than cold. Cold weather makes a weak battery reveal itself on a January morning, but sustained heat is what cooks the electrolyte and corrodes the grids inside, and our engine bays never really cool down.
Then there’s how we drive. A ten-minute run from an HDB carpark to the office, five days a week, doesn’t give the alternator time to put back what starting the car took out. Do that for months and the battery lives permanently at partial charge, which sulphates the plates and reduces what it can hold. Add a hardwired dashcam drawing current all day and the maths gets worse again.
Realistically, most owners here get around two to four years, with AGM in a well-driven car going longer and a cheap battery in a short-trip car going shorter. It varies too much for a single number to be useful. Once yours passes two years, have it tested at every service instead of waiting for it to fail.
The warning signs, roughly in the order they turn up
Batteries rarely die without notice. The trouble is that the early signals are easy to explain away.
- Start-stop stops working. It is the tell most owners miss. If your car used to cut the engine at lights and has quietly given up, it has decided the battery can’t be trusted with the load.
- A slower crank on the first start of the day. Half a second longer than it used to take is worth acting on. You know your own car’s starting sound better than any tester does.
- Lights dimming at idle, or headlights visibly dropping when the aircon blower steps up.
- Electrical oddities. The radio resetting, the clock losing time, the auto-up window forgetting itself, warning lights appearing and clearing for no reason. - More than one jump start. One jump after leaving the lights on all night is bad luck. A second jump within a few months is the battery telling you it’s finished.
When it keeps dying, it’s often not the battery
Replacing a battery on a hunch is how people end up buying two of them. A proper test takes minutes: a load or conductance test reads the battery’s real condition, and a charging-system test confirms the alternator is holding voltage under load.
Owners often arrive with a battery health percentage from a scan tool or a dealer report, asking whether it means the battery is dying. Treat that figure as a prompt, not a verdict. Those readings are estimates, different tools calculate them differently, and a discharged battery that’s perfectly healthy once charged will read low. If a report shows a low percentage and the car starts fine, the answer is a load test on a fully charged battery, not a purchase.
The other half of this is parasitic drain, meaning something that keeps drinking current after you lock the car and walk away. A hardwired dashcam left on parking mode is the usual suspect, and it will flatten a healthy battery given long enough. Aftermarket alarms, badly installed audio, a boot lamp that never switches off, or a module that refuses to go to sleep will all do the same. A drain test is real diagnostic work, and investigation commonly runs $50 to $200 depending on depth. Still cheaper than a second AGM battery.
Mobile battery vans and the emergency premium
The vans that come to your carpark and fit a battery on the spot are legitimate operations, and when you’re stranded on a Sunday night with a boot full of groceries they earn their money. What you’re buying is speed.
You are paying a premium for the call-out, and it is highest at night and over long holidays. Ask for the fitted price before they open the bonnet. If the car still starts and you’ve only noticed the warning signs, book it in during working hours and pay the ordinary price. Worth asking a mobile fitter what’s actually on the van. If your car needs a particular AGM size or needs registering afterwards, the roadside answer may be a battery that fits rather than the one your car wants. Getting home on it is fine. Just don’t treat it as the end of the story.
When not to spend the money
Some of the batteries we’re asked to replace don’t need replacing, so here’s where we’d tell you to keep your wallet shut.
A car that sat parked for two or three weeks and won’t start has a discharged battery, not necessarily a dead one. A proper charge on a bench charger and a retest will tell you which, because the two look identical from the driver’s seat.
Left the interior light on overnight? Jump it, give it a decent run, then have it tested. One deep discharge takes something off a battery’s life, but a healthy one recovers.
A battery under two years old that’s misbehaving is a warranty claim or a charging fault, not a purchase.
And if the car is heading for scrapping or export in the next few months, a top-of-the-range AGM is money you will not see again. Run it out while the old battery still cranks the engine reliably. Once it genuinely won’t start the car, fit the cheapest correct-specification battery that gets you to deregistration day. Nobody at the scrapyard pays you for a nearly new battery.
Warranty terms, and where the old one goes
Battery warranties here run from a few months to a couple of years depending on brand and type, and the wording matters more than the length. Ask whether it’s full replacement or pro-rated, since pro-rated means a failure in year two only earns partial credit toward the next one. Ask whether the original invoice is required, then keep it in the glovebox rather than a drawer at home.
What voids a warranty is consistent across brands: a cracked case, fitting it in an application it wasn’t rated for (a flooded battery in a start-stop car counts), repeated deep discharge, a loose hold-down that let it vibrate, and tampering with a sealed AGM unit. None of that is unreasonable. It does mean the cheap route can leave you with no comeback when it fails early.
Last thing, and it takes ten seconds to get right. A car battery is lead and acid, properly recyclable and genuinely hazardous. It doesn’t go in a bin, and it shouldn’t live in your boot for six months. Any workshop that fits one should take the old one away for recycling as part of the job.
What we would actually do
Test before buying. A load or conductance test plus a charging-system check takes minutes and settles whether you need a battery at all, which is worth doing before spending anything from $150 to $900.
Match the spec the car was built for and no higher. Flooded for an older car with no start-stop, EFB or AGM where the car asks for it, and pay the $50 to $150 registration if your model needs it. That fee is the cheapest part of the job and the one that decides how long the expensive part lasts.
If the car is going for scrapping or export within months, run the old battery until it genuinely will not crank, then fit the cheapest correct-specification unit. If it is under two years old and misbehaving, treat it as a warranty claim or a charging fault and buy nothing.
