The amber engine symbol appears somewhere between the carpark and the second set of lights, and the only question that matters right now is whether the car should keep moving. That answer takes about four seconds of looking at the dashboard, and almost nobody gets told what to look at. So owners either panic over a fuel cap they didn’t click shut, or keep driving on a misfire until the catalytic converter is cooked. Triage first. The explanation can wait until you are parked.
Before you drive it any further
Look at whether the light is flashing or steady. Flashing usually means an active misfire, and a misfire cooks the catalytic converter while you drive. Steady means a stored fault, not an emergency.
Check what else is lit. Engine light plus a temperature warning, an oil pressure warning, smoke or a real loss of power means stop and arrange recovery, not drive on gently.
Do not clear the code. Clearing throws away the freeze frame data that shows what the car was doing when the fault registered, and it resets the readiness monitors, which matters if an inspection is coming.
Write down what happened. Date, rough mileage, what the car was doing, whether you had just refuelled. It cuts real time off the diagnosis, and time is the thing you pay for.
- Look at the light itself. Flashing or steady. If it is flashing, plan to stop as soon as it is safe rather than finishing your journey.
- Scan the rest of the dashboard. Temperature, oil pressure, battery. A second warning alongside the engine light changes the answer from drive gently to stop.
- Listen and feel. Hesitation, a rough idle, a new noise, lost power. If the car feels wrong, treat it as the stop case.
- Pull over somewhere safe and check the fuel cap. Off, look at the seal, back on until it clicks. Free, and genuinely one of the common causes.
- Book the scan, and leave the code stored. A day or two is fine for a steady light on a car that drives normally.

Flashing or steady, and why the difference is expensive
If the light is flashing, pull over as soon as you safely can. A flashing check engine light almost always means an active misfire, which is to say one cylinder isn’t burning its fuel properly and that unburnt fuel is going out into the exhaust, where it lights off inside the catalytic converter instead. The converter isn’t built for that kind of heat. A short drive on a flashing light can turn a set of ignition coils and spark plugs into a converter replacement.
If the light is steady, the car pulls the way it always does, the temperature needle sits where it always sits, and nothing sounds different, you can drive gently and book a scan in the next day or two. Steady means a stored fault, not an emergency. Go easy on the hard acceleration, keep the long expressway runs short, and don’t let it sit for three weeks because the week got busy.
The third case is the one to take seriously. Engine light plus a temperature warning, an oil pressure warning (which is a different thing from spotting a drip on the carpark floor, a distinction we’ve explained in our guide to engine oil leaks), smoke from anywhere, a real loss of power, or a noise you’ve never heard before: stop. On an expressway, EMAS recovery will move you off the road at no charge, though only as far as the nearest carpark or safe spot, so the onward tow to a workshop is yours to arrange and pay for. Being in a carpark making a calm phone call beats standing on the shoulder of the AYE.

Three checks that cost you nothing before you book anything
Start with the fuel cap, because it costs nothing and it’s genuinely common. The evaporative emissions system holds a small pressure or vacuum in the fuel tank and tests itself for leaks, so a cap that wasn’t turned until it clicked reads as a leak. Take it off, look at the rubber seal for cracks or twisting, put it back on until you hear at least one click. The light won’t go out that instant, since the system has to run its self-test again, and that can take a couple of days of ordinary driving. If it clears on its own, that was your fault, and you owe nobody anything.
Open the bonnet while you’re at it and look for something obvious: an air intake hose popped off its clamp, a sensor plug hanging loose, a chewed wire. Two minutes, no tools. Worth doing especially if the light appeared right after somebody worked on the car, because a knocked-off connector is one of the classics.
The third check just needs a pen. Write down the date, roughly the mileage, what the car was doing when the light came on, and whether you’d just refuelled. It sounds fussy, and it cuts real time off the diagnosis. Time is the thing you’re paying for.
What the light is actually telling you
Your engine runs under a computer that watches dozens of values as you drive: air going in, fuel going in, oxygen coming out, temperatures, pressures, how smoothly each cylinder fires. Every one of those has a window the manufacturer decided was normal. When a reading drifts outside its window and stays there, the computer records a fault code and switches on the lamp. That’s the whole mechanism, and it’s simpler than most owners assume.
Which is exactly why the same amber symbol covers a petrol cap that wasn’t clicked shut and a catalytic converter that has stopped converting. The light doesn’t rank faults by cost or urgency, because it can’t. Owners read it as a verdict, and it isn’t one. It’s the opening line of a conversation, and anyone who tells you what’s wrong with your car without plugging anything in is making it up.
What usually sets it off on cars here
Roughly in the order we see them come through the door:
- Fuel cap and evaporative emissions leaks. The cheapest outcome on the list, and more common than owners expect. Cracked filler necks and tired purge valves live in this family too
- Oxygen sensors. They age, go lazy, and start reporting a mixture the engine doesn’t actually have, which makes the computer correct a problem that was never there
- Ignition coils and spark plugs. The misfire family, and the reason a light flashes rather than sits steady
- Mass airflow sensor. Dirty or drifting, and the engine runs rich or lean with a hesitation you can usually feel under your right foot
- EGR valve and passages clogged with carbon, which builds up faster on cars that live on short, slow trips
- Catalytic converter efficiency. Usually the consequence of a misfire that ran too long, rather than a fault that starts by itself
- Wiring, connectors and earth points. Years of heat, humidity and the occasional flooded carpark do real damage to insulation and pin contacts
Two of those deserve a Singapore footnote. The local pattern of HDB carpark to office and back means a lot of engines here never get properly hot, so carbon builds in the EGR passages earlier than the mileage suggests. Our climate does the rest, and brittle connector shells with green, corroded pins are a routine find under a bonnet here.
A code is a starting point, not an answer
Take P0420, a code that turns up regularly on older cars: catalyst system efficiency below threshold. Read it literally and it says replace the catalytic converter. Read it properly and it says the computer compared the oxygen sensor before the converter against the one after it and didn’t like the difference. That difference can come from a tired converter, a lazy downstream sensor, a small exhaust leak upstream, or a misfire that has been quietly wrecking the converter for months. One code, four very different bills.
So a workshop that quotes a converter straight off the code, with no testing in between, is guessing with your money. On the floor the habit has a name: throwing parts at it. Fit the cheapest likely part, clear the code, hand the keys back, and when the car returns, fit the next part along. Every round gets billed. Nobody has technically lied to you, and you’ve still paid two or three times for one fault.
Cheap code readers and phone apps
Buy one. A Bluetooth OBD dongle and a decent phone app cost less than a tank of petrol, and walking into a workshop already knowing your code changes the conversation you have. You can see whether the fault is stored as pending or confirmed. You can watch coolant temperature and fuel trims as you drive, which is more than most owners ever get to see of their own car.
They do have real limits. The cheap ones read generic powertrain codes only, so manufacturer-specific faults in the body, chassis and network modules need a proper scan tool. A dongle cannot test a circuit or tell you a connector is corroded behind a bracket. It will, however, cheerfully let you clear a code, which is where owners get themselves into trouble.
There’s a practical warning that comes with them. Leave the dongle permanently plugged into the port and on some cars it keeps a module awake after you lock the doors, which is enough to flatten a battery over a long weekend. Unplug it when you’re done reading.
The inspection trap most owners fall into
Cars between three and ten years old get inspected every two years, and once past ten it becomes annual. There’s a VICOM centre at Kaki Bukit a few minutes from our unit, and the inspection fee itself is modest, well under $100 for a car.
An active engine management fault can fail you, so owners do the obvious thing and clear the code on the morning of the appointment. It doesn’t work, for a reason worth understanding. Clearing the fault memory also resets the readiness monitors, which are the self-tests the computer runs on the emissions systems as you drive. Until those tests finish, the car reports itself as not ready. Not ready is its own problem at the counter. You’ve traded a known fault for an unknown one and thrown away the freeze frame data that would have helped diagnose it.
Fix the cause first. Then drive the car for a few days of mixed conditions, cold starts included, some steady running and some stop-start, so the monitors finish their tests and the system reports ready. When the light comes on and the fault hides
Sometimes the light appears, you bring the car in, and the engine behaves impeccably on the ramp. That happens more often than owners are led to expect, and it is not a sign anyone is fobbing you off.
The useful thing is the freeze frame. When the fault registers, the computer snapshots the conditions at that exact moment: engine speed, load, coolant temperature, road speed, fuel trims. That snapshot is often worth more than the code, because it tells us the fault only shows up cold, or only at light load, or only once the aircon compressor kicks in. So don’t clear the code before you bring the car in. Clearing feels tidy, and it throws the evidence away.
A workshop being straight with you will say plainly that a fault is intermittent, tell you what has been ruled out and how, and either fit a logger or ask you to come back while the light is on. Anyone promising a definite answer on the spot for an intermittent fault is selling a certainty they don’t have.
What to tell the workshop when you book
Diagnosis is detective work, and you’re the only witness. Send this along with the booking:
- Whether the light is flashing or steady, and whether that has changed since it first appeared
- When it first came on, with the date and roughly the mileage
- What the car was doing at the time: cold start, hard acceleration, idling in traffic, straight after refuelling, driving through standing water
- Anything that feels different now, such as hesitation, a rough idle, worse fuel economy, or a smell
- Any work done in the weeks before, including servicing, a battery change, an aircon job, or a dashcam install
- Whether anybody has already read or cleared the code, and what that code was
Those six lines save us hunting for things you already know, and since you’re the one paying for the hunt, the information is worth more to you than it is to us.
Now the money: what a diagnosis costs, and when not to spend it
With the car parked and the fault still stored, this is the point where price becomes a fair question. A code read takes a minute. Plenty of places will do it free or for a token amount, and that’s fine as far as it goes, because you leave knowing your code. A diagnosis is different work altogether: live data while the engine runs, testing the circuit rather than trusting what the code implies, comparing readings against specification, and sometimes moving a suspect part to another cylinder to see whether the fault follows it. Typical independent pricing here for that work runs around $50 to $200, depending on how deep the investigation has to go.
That range irritates people, and we understand why, since you’re being asked to pay before anything has been fixed. Weigh it against the alternative. Agent and dealer labour commonly runs $150 to $250 an hour, and dealer parts carry steep markups on top, so one guessed part at an authorised centre can cost more than the diagnosis plus the correct repair at an independent. When not to spend money on this
There are situations where the right advice is to keep your wallet shut, and they don’t get written about much, because nobody makes money from them.
If you tightened the fuel cap and the light went out by itself over the following few days, that is finished. Don’t book anything. Don’t let anyone charge you for a diagnosis to confirm what the car already told you.
If a workshop reads your code and quotes a part in the same breath with no test in between, don’t authorise it. Ask which test confirmed that part, and expect a specific answer, something like a swapped coil that moved the misfire to a different cylinder. A straight answer costs them nothing when they’ve actually done the work.
Then there’s the COE question, which changes everything on an older car. A converter or an EGR job on a car with eight months of licence left is a different decision from the same job on a car you’ve just renewed for ten years. Ask what the fault does if left alone, because the answers separate cleanly: some cost you a little fuel economy and nothing else, some will fail your inspection, and some quietly destroy a more expensive part while you wait. Only the last group has a real deadline.
