No puddle on the concrete, no steam, no hose hanging off anything. The level goes down all the same, because what is leaving the system never gets as far as the ground. On a Mercedes the first move is a gauge on the cooling system, not a part number.
A cooling fault on a modern Mercedes shows up in the instrument cluster long before it shows up as steam. Send over whichever of the three fits, with your model year attached.
The message appears on a Tuesday, is gone by Thursday, and returns three weeks later without you having touched anything. That pattern is a level sitting right on the sensor threshold rather than a fault that repairs itself. Every time it clears, a little more has gone.

Mercedes moulds the thermostat into a plastic housing and bolts the whole thing to an alloy engine. There are sound reasons for building it that way. Plastic is light, it does not corrode from the inside, and casting the thermostat, the sensor boss and the hose stubs into one piece removes several joints that would each have needed sealing on their own.
The difficulty is the pairing. Plastic and alloy grow at different rates as they heat, so every warm-up drags the sealing face a fraction out of line and every cool-down pulls it back. Repeat that a few thousand times and the plastic keeps some of the movement. The face is no longer quite flat, the gasket has nothing flat to press against, and pressurised coolant goes looking for the gap.
Our climate takes away the half of that cycle where things properly cool. The bay is warm before you reach the main road, it stays warm in the queue at the barrier, and heat soak holds the housing hot long after the key is out. Nothing in the day gives the plastic a rest, and the fluid inside sits under pressure for as long as it is hot.
From the driver’s seat all of that arrives as one thing, a level that will not stay where you put it. A weep does not gather into a drop. It arrives on metal well past the boiling point of coolant, leaves as vapour, and dries to a deposit the colour of whatever is in the system. That is the entire reason a top-up feels like it fixed something, and the reason people keep doing it until the day the temperature climbs.
Both are decisions people genuinely make, and one of them is cheap for roughly a year. Here is what sits behind each column.
Our argument against the second column is not really about the repair bill. It is about what happens when a cooling system stops coping altogether. A few minutes above temperature can cost more than every cooling part on the car put together, and the warning that would have prevented it was sitting on the dash a month earlier looking like nothing at all.
What the cluster said, how often it comes back, and roughly how much goes in when you top it up. That much already narrows the list before the car is booked in.
The system is brought up to its working pressure with the engine cold, then left alone with a gauge on it. If the needle drops, coolant is escaping somewhere, and the rate it drops at narrows down how big the gap is.
Tracer into the coolant, engine brought up to temperature, then a UV lamp along the housing joint, the hose ends and the radiator seams. Warm is when a weeping joint opens up and stops hiding.
Radiator, expansion tank, cap, hoses, the auxiliary pump where one is fitted, and the oil cooler. The housing is the common answer on these engines, which is precisely why it does not get to be the automatic one.
Everything you are being asked to pay for is on the paper twice, once as a line item and once as a picture of your own engine, with the days we need the car alongside. No part gets bought until that quote has your yes on it.
New housing and gasket onto a clean face, correct coolant, vacuum fill, then a run up to temperature while the readings are watched until they settle. The housing that came off is yours to keep if you want it.
You will not find a price on this page. Three words on a job sheet cover a housing that comes off in an afternoon and a job that begins with half the front of the engine on a bench, and a range spanning both would tell you nothing useful. The list underneath is what actually decides where yours sits.
On the four-cylinder cars the housing can be reached from above once a few things are moved aside. On the six-cylinder and mild-hybrid cars there is more packaging and more wiring around the same area, and getting to it is where the hours collect.
In some cases the plastic is perfectly sound and only the gasket has let go. In others the housing has split at a bolt boss and the sensor threaded into it comes along for the ride. Which of those you have gets settled with the part in your hand.
Coolant topped up with water, or with whatever bottle was nearest, stops protecting the metal and the plastic it runs through. If what comes out is cloudy, rusty or has oil sitting in it, the system needs flushing before anything fresh goes back.
Hoses, clips and wiring that have spent a year in the path of drying coolant come out harder and more brittle than they should be. Swapping those out while the area is open means you are not paying a second time to reach the same spot.
A cooling system is a pump, a valve, a radiator, a set of fan speeds and the readings that drive them. A leak repaired under a fan that no longer does its job simply brings the car back, so the electrical half gets tested too.
If the car has been driven hot, even once, that question gets closed before new parts go anywhere near it. Checking is quick, and the answer changes what the quote ought to say rather than being discovered afterwards.
The quote lands with pictures beside every line and labour kept apart from parts, so none of it has to be taken on trust. What you agree to is what the invoice says at the end of it. Should the area behind the housing look worse once it is off the engine, work stops there and you get a call before anything else happens. Anything we replace is bagged and handed over when you collect.
Because it is leaving as vapour instead of as liquid. A plastic thermostat housing that has stopped sealing lets coolant out a trace at a time, onto an engine sitting well above the boiling point of what is inside the system. It dries before enough of it can collect to fall, so nothing ever reaches the ground for you to find. Put the system under pressure while it is cold and that advantage disappears, because a gauge does not care how hot the metal was.
Dried coolant, almost always. Coolant leaving at a trickle loses its water to the heat, and the additives left behind harden into a film along the route it travelled. Photograph that before anyone cleans it off, because the highest point of the trail sits nearest the source and a washed engine bay has thrown the clue away. Mercedes has not used one coolant colour across every model year either, so read where the residue sits rather than what shade it is.
On the four-cylinder petrol engines of roughly the last fifteen years, generally yes. The thermostat is moulded into a plastic housing that also carries hose stubs and a temperature sensor, so when the joint weeps it is the housing that gets renewed rather than a thermostat on its own. Other engine families are laid out differently, which is one of the reasons we ask for the model year before saying anything at all about parts.
Because the sensor in the expansion tank reads a level, not a leak. Once the level is sitting close to the float, a slope, a firm corner or the coolant expanding as it warms is enough to carry it across the threshold in either direction. The message clearing only tells you the float has moved. It does not tell you that anything found its way back into the system.
For the drive to somewhere it can be looked at, usually. For weeks on end, no. A system running short of coolant has air filling the gap, and air carries almost no heat away, so the number on the display stops describing what the hottest part of the engine is actually doing. Two things are worth watching while you are still driving it. One is a reading that settles higher than you are used to. The other is a message that stops asking you to top up and starts telling you to stop. Either of those means pulling over and letting the engine cool, not pressing on to somewhere more convenient.
Not if you want the repair to last. These engines run a coolant specification chosen to suit alloy castings and plastic housings, and mixing chemistries can leave you with a fluid that drops out of suspension or stops inhibiting corrosion altogether. Plain water is worse again, since it boils lower and brings nothing along to protect the metal. If something has already gone in and you are not sure what it was, say so, because a flush costs less than finding out the hard way.
For most four-cylinder cars, plan on the car being with us for a day once the housing has arrived, occasionally a little less. Where the housing sits deeper in the bay, or where a hose, a sensor or a length of wiring has been soaking in coolant long enough to need renewing too, add to that. Whatever the answer is, it goes on the quote as a number of days before you agree to anything, along with a straight yes or no on whether the part is here or has to be brought in.
Because the same description covers very different jobs, and because the housing is not always the answer. Until the system has been held under pressure, any number is somebody choosing which part they think is losing coolant and hoping they chose well.
