A hesitant first-to-second on a cold morning out of an HDB carpark. A low-speed shudder crawling toward an ERP gantry. A judder pulling away in an A-Class or CLA. Those three jerks come from three different gearboxes, and the fix depends entirely on which one sits under your car.
Owners type “jerking” or “juddering” into a search box and mean six genuinely different things. Pick the one that matches, and it points toward a different part of the car before a single tool comes out.
Both the 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic shift firmer until the fluid warms through. If it disappears within a few minutes and never comes back once the car is up to temperature, it is usually normal. Past a certain mileage, the same symptom can be the conductor plate losing its edge.

On the 9G-Tronic this is the classic early sign of torque converter lock-up wear, and fluid condition is the first thing worth checking.

The physical tiebreaker is the code stamped on the transmission housing itself, 722.9, 725.0 or 724.0/724.1, read against the car’s own build data. That code decides everything downstream: what gets checked first, how far a fluid service and a relearn can take you, and what a genuine repair would actually involve.
Sitting on top of the valve body inside a 7G-Tronic is a flat electronic module wired straight into the shift solenoids, and it carries the transmission’s own software. Workshops here shorten that to the conductor plate, or just “mecha unit” on the floor at Kaki Bukit. When it starts to fail, drive from Park or Reverse hesitates for a beat before taking up, changes come through harder than they should, and on some units fluid weeps from the plate’s 13-pin connector where it seals against the transmission case.
Two failure paths look nearly identical from the driver’s seat but cost very differently to put right. An electronic fault inside the plate itself is one story. Wear inside the valve body’s own bores, where years of fluid flow have opened up tolerances that were never meant to move, is another. The earliest 722.9 production years bundled both parts as a single replacement unit; later revisions split them, so a worn plate can often be swapped on its own while a sound valve body stays exactly where it is.
None of that gets settled by guessing. It gets settled by a proper read of what the transmission control unit has stored, followed by a road test that reproduces the hesitation rather than a rough approximation of one.
Nine gears, a genuinely different design from the 722.9, and its own early warning sign long before anything approaches a repair.
The 725.0 shows its age through the torque converter’s own lock-up clutch, which is meant to bind engine and gearbox rigidly together once the car settles at a steady speed. As that clutch material wears, the first sign is a shudder felt low down, easing into a jam or braking towards a light, well before any hardware could reasonably be called failed.
Ignore that shudder and it becomes a maintenance problem in its own right. Wear particles from the clutch material travel through the fluid and can foul the valve body and its solenoids, turning a straightforward fluid service into a more involved clean-out. Mercedes specifies MB 236.17 fluid for the 9G-Tronic and markets it as filled for life, which again assumes a gentler cycle than a daily crawl across the island delivers. The 7G-DCT shares two digits with the 7G-Tronic and nothing else. Confusing the two leads to the wrong diagnosis before the car has even been looked at.
Fitted across the A-Class W176 and W177, the CLA C117 and the GLA X156, the 724.0 and 724.1 family is a seven-speed wet dual clutch. Rather than a fluid coupling doing the work, two clutch packs running in oil physically close to take up drive, the way a manual gearbox’s clutch does but managed entirely by a mechatronic control unit. That word covers both the hydraulics and the electronics that decide exactly how firmly each clutch closes.
Judder pulling away, a jerky or delayed take-up at low speed, and slip under light throttle all trace back to that same clutch pack and its mechatronic unit, usually surfacing somewhere in the tens of thousands of kilometres. Mercedes specifies MB 236.21 fluid for this gearbox on a roughly 60,000 km cycle, and because the clutch material itself is what wears, fluid condition and clutch behaviour under load both get checked before anyone talks about a mechatronic replacement, which sits well above a routine fluid service in scope.
A road test comes first, always, because a jerk described over the phone and a jerk felt on a real drive rarely match exactly. We want to feel when it happens: cold or warm, under light throttle or hard acceleration, only on the first few gears or right through the range.
Fluid condition follows. Colour, smell and what settles out on a drained sample tell a fair amount about how a gearbox has been living before a single panel comes off. Then the transmission control unit gets read properly with the proper tools, not a generic code reader, pulling the actual adaptation values the gearbox has learned rather than a single pass or fail code. If the transmission control unit has simply drifted from how the clutches or solenoids actually behave, an adaptation relearn teaches it to match the hardware again. Harsh or hesitant shifting can disappear immediately, and it costs nothing like a repair.

You get the finding in writing first: the gearbox named, what the data showed, and what a relearn versus a repair would each involve. Nothing starts until you say so, and if the picture changes partway through, the car stops and you get a message rather than a surprise at collection.
A worn mount or a flaky sensor can feel exactly like a transmission fault from the driver’s seat, and both are cheaper to fix than either.
A conductor plate or a clutch pack failing on a five-year-old car is a straightforward repair decision. The same fault on a Mercedes approaching its tenth COE year sits inside a bigger question: repair it and keep running on the existing certificate, or let the PARF rebate and a COE renewal decision happen at the same time the gearbox does. Neither answer is automatically right, and guessing from the service book alone tends to guess wrong.
What actually helps is a proper inspection that names the gearbox fault on its own terms, separate from whatever else the car might need over the renewed period, so the decision rests on the car in front of you rather than a general reputation for what Mercedes gearboxes cost to fix. Cold fluid is thicker, and both the 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic shift firmer through the first couple of changes until everything reaches working temperature. That alone is normal. On a car with real mileage behind it, the same cold hesitation can also be the conductor plate starting to lose its edge, so the distinction is whether it clears within a few minutes or lingers once the car is fully warm.

Causes range from a weak battery confusing the electronics to genuine wear inside the box, so the message alone diagnoses nothing. Pull over safely, avoid pushing the car, and get the stored fault read properly before driving any real distance.
Related, not identical. The valve body is the hydraulic block that directs fluid to shift each gear, and the conductor plate is the electronic unit mounted on top of it, wiring the solenoids together and holding the gearbox’s software. Earlier 722.9 units need both replaced as a pair. Later revisions allow the conductor plate to be swapped alone while the original valve body stays in the car, which is the cheaper outcome of the two.
No, and the names cause genuine confusion. A C-Class or E-Class 7G-Tronic is a torque converter automatic. The A-Class, CLA and GLA run a completely different unit, the 7G-DCT, a wet dual clutch that takes up drive by closing clutch plates rather than through fluid. Judder pulling away on these smaller cars usually points to clutch wear or the mechatronic control unit, not the conductor plate story that affects the bigger cars.
Treat it as due regardless of what the service book implies. “Sealed for life” assumes a gentler driving cycle than Singapore’s stop-start expressways and multi-storey carparks deliver, and fluid that has never been changed carries years of heat and wear material by the time a car reaches real mileage. A drain and refill in the correct specification is a legitimate first step for harsh or jerky shifting, not an upsell.
