It lands in yellow the moment you press start, then it clears on its own, then it is back a day later. Sometimes the culprit is a small unit hidden behind a trim panel. On a car with EQ Boost it can just as easily sit on the 48V side. Readings settle which one, and nothing else does.
This fault rarely arrives all at once. It builds, and where you have caught it changes how quickly it can be sorted. Say which of the three your car is doing and we can start narrowing it before you arrive.
The car wakes, runs its own check, and the message is sitting there before you have touched the gear selector. Drive for ten minutes and it may disappear as though nothing happened. It has not been fixed. The system simply stopped asking that question until the next cold start, which is why it turns up in the morning far more than it does in the evening.

That function is one of the first things the car withdraws when it cannot trust the supply, because a restart is exactly when the voltage dips hardest. Plenty of owners assume a setting got switched off. It is worth having the batteries read before you go hunting through menus.

An unsteady supply upsets modules that have nothing wrong with them, and each one files its own complaint. Reading the newest message first sends you off in the wrong direction, so the order these arrived in matters more than the count.

A great deal of what is wired into a modern Mercedes will not tolerate that sag, so a second and much smaller supply steps in and keeps the line steady for the systems that would otherwise blink out and reboot.
That is why the warning almost always shows at start-up rather than halfway down the expressway. The check runs as the car wakes, the auxiliary side fails to hold what it is supposed to hold, and the message is in front of you before you have moved. Later it clears. Nothing was repaired in between.
The name is where half the confusion starts. On the earlier cars the part genuinely is a small battery with its own pair of terminals, tucked out of sight behind a panel. On a good number of the later ones it is not a battery at all, but a sealed converter module doing the same steadying work without cells in it. Identical words on the dash, completely different thing on the bench, and the two are not interchangeable.
Then there is the version that has nothing to do with either part. A main battery down on capacity, a charging output sitting under where it belongs, or something quietly drawing current while the car is parked will all push the system into the same complaint. What your car is telling you depends on how its electrical side was put together, and the wording gives none of that away. Find your model and the years it ran, then read across. The codes in brackets are body designations, and they matter more here than the name on the boot lid does, because two generations of the same car can sit either side of a change in how the current is managed.
Two of those rows can look alike on paper. The split that changes everything is whether your car has EQ Boost, because that decides whether there is a 48V network to test at all. If the boot lid does not tell you and the handbook is somewhere in the house, the chassis number will settle it in a minute.
These cars show you the same message either way. What sits behind it decides whether this is an afternoon or a staged job, and that gets settled with a meter rather than over the phone.
Left alone this follows a fairly predictable path. Stop-start switches itself off first, and most owners live with that quite happily. Then the supply sags a little further on every restart, and modules that had no complaint of their own start filing one, until a single yellow line has turned into a screen you cannot read past. By then the original fault is buried under the noise it caused, and untangling which came first takes longer than dealing with it did at the start. There is a real safety edge to it too. A car that struggles to hold voltage at start-up is a car that will eventually not start at all, and it will pick the time.
Mercedes wording is specific, and a photo of the cluster is worth more than a description of it. That alone tells us which system to open the bonnet for.
State of charge, then capacity under load. A main battery on its way out will throw this message on a car whose auxiliary unit is perfectly healthy, and it is the cheapest thing on the list to rule out.
Output with the engine running and what it does when the car is loaded up. A charging fault starves both batteries at once, and replacing either of them fixes nothing at all.
Current draw measured after everything has gone to sleep, which needs patience more than skill. Chasing a drain without that figure in hand is how a car ends up on its second new battery in a year.
Only now does the small unit get its turn. On an EQ Boost car the 48V battery and the converter joining the two systems get the same treatment, because a fault on one side reads as trouble on the other.
The part goes in and the charging management is told there is a fresh battery in the car, so it charges to the right profile instead of the old one’s. Then the car goes back out and gets checked again before anyone calls it finished.
Nobody can put a number on this before the car has been read, because the same six words on your dash cover a small part behind one panel and two days of chasing a current draw. What we can set out is every lever that pushes a job towards one end or the other.
A small auxiliary battery and a sealed converter module are nothing alike to buy or to fit. Your dash reads the same either way, which is precisely why the measuring has to come before the ordering.
Some come out from behind one clip-off cover. Others want carpet lifted or boot trim removed before anyone can reach a bolt. That is labour, and it varies far more between models than the part itself does.
Frequently it is. A main battery that has been failing quietly for months is often why the auxiliary side gave up, and doing one without the other buys a short and expensive peace.
An EQ Boost car brings a second electrical system to test and a different class of component to replace if the fault is on that side. It also means more of the diagnosis has to happen before anything is ordered.
If something is pulling current overnight, finding it is counted in hours of sitting, switching and measuring rather than in parts. Most cars need none of this. A few need every hour of it.
A new battery has to be logged with the car’s charging management or it gets charged to the wrong profile and ages early. On some builds that is short. On others it comes wrapped in a longer set of checks.
You get the readings written down: main battery state and capacity, charging output, the auxiliary side, and the 48V figures where your car has them. The quote is built against those numbers, with the labour kept on its own lines and away from the components, and nothing is bought before you have read it through. If a figure shifts after the work has started, we pause and ring you rather than press on. Whatever comes off the car is bagged and handed back with it.
It means the car has run its check on the secondary supply and did not get the result it wanted. That supply exists to hold the voltage steady while the main battery is busy cranking, because a lot of what is wired into these cars will reset if the line dips. On the earlier models the part really is a small battery. On many of the later ones it is a sealed converter module instead, doing the same job without cells inside it. What the message does not tell you is whether the fault is in that part, in the main battery, in the charging output, or in something drawing current while the car sleeps. All four produce the same wording.
Usually yes, for a short while, and most owners do. The car will normally switch off its stop-start function and carry on. What you are running is a system that has already told you it cannot hold voltage properly at start-up, so the risk is not a breakdown at speed but a morning where the car simply will not wake. Get it read within a week or two. If the engine has started cranking slowly, or the message now arrives with other warnings alongside it, treat that as the car asking for attention rather than tolerating it.
Because the car has decided it cannot guarantee a clean restart. Switching the engine off at a junction is only safe if the electrical system can bring it back without everything else stumbling, and that judgement leans on the state of both batteries and the charging output. When any of those slip below what the car wants, the function is withdrawn quietly and often without a message at all. It is one of the earliest signs of this fault, and it is worth having the batteries read before you go looking through the menus for a setting.
No, and they are not doing the same job. The main battery is the heavy one that turns the engine over. The auxiliary unit is much smaller and never starts anything. Its work is to keep the supply steady for the voltage-sensitive systems during the moment the starter is pulling hard, and during every stop-start restart. Because of that difference they fail differently too. A dying main battery shows up as slow cranking. A failing auxiliary unit tends to show up as this message and a stop-start function that has gone missing.
It can, and that is the trap. Cars with EQ Boost carry a second electrical system built around a 48V lithium battery and a starter-generator, joined to the ordinary 12V side by a converter. A fault anywhere in that chain can surface as a battery warning, and the wording gives no clue about which network it came from. This is why a car with EQ Boost gets both sides measured rather than the small unit alone. Replacing a 12V component on a car whose complaint sits on the 48V side is money spent for no change on the dash.
Broadly, three engine families. The M264 2.0 four uses a belt-driven starter-generator and turns up in cars such as the C 200 and C 300, E 200 and E 350, GLC 200 and 300 and the CLS 350 from roughly 2018. The M256 straight-six has the generator in line with the crankshaft and sits in the E 450 from the 2020 facelift, plus CLS 450, S 450 and GLE 450 and the 53 badges built on the same engine, from roughly 2017. The M254 four moved the generator back to the gearbox end and appears in the W206 C-Class, the X254 GLC and the W214 E-Class. Not every car in those ranges was built with it, so if you are unsure, send us the chassis number and we will confirm it.
Yes, and skipping it is a false economy. These cars run a charging strategy shaped around the battery they think is fitted, including how old it is and what type it is. Put a new one in without telling the car, and it carries on charging to the profile of a battery that is no longer there. The new one then gets undercharged or overworked and ages early, which is how an owner ends up buying two batteries inside a couple of years. Registration is part of the job here, not an extra line at the end.
Three common reasons. The replacement went into the wrong side of the problem, which happens when the main battery is changed but the auxiliary unit was the fault, or the other way round. The new battery was never registered, so the charging management is still working to the old profile. Or there is a drain quietly flattening things overnight, in which case any battery you fit is going to end up in the same state as the last one. A car that eats batteries is telling you something, and the answer is almost never a better battery.
We do not put a figure on it before the car has been read. The honest answer sits in a range, because a twenty minute swap and a long electrical hunt both begin with the same yellow line on your dash. What moves it is which component your car was built with, how buried it is, whether the main battery is going at the same time, whether there is a 48V network to test as well, and how many hours any drain takes to trace. Once the readings exist you get an itemised quote with labour listed apart from components, and nothing is ordered until you have given the go-ahead.
